KOTA KINABALU – Sabah’s water supply problems are complex, involving problems across several ministries, said state finance minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun.

The Karanaan assemblyman said he and Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya, who is also state public works minister, agreed that “drastic and firm measures” are needed.

“Both of us agree that a revamp of the Water Department is needed. But there are also matters out of our control.

“I know a lot of people think that by changing the people, the problem would be solved. But it does not work that way.

“There are other issues and factors.. it is not just the Sabah Water Department, but also matters linked to other ministries,” Masidi told reporters last night.

Masidi and Shahelmey met last week and discussed the state’s public infrastructure matters, including road upgrading and water supply. Shahelmy, as state works minister, also oversees the state Water Department.

The state government sees the building of the controversial Papar Dam as one solution to the water supply problems.

The state water and public works departments are also in the midst of preparing a cabinet paper on dealing with the water issues in Kota Kinabalu and Putatan.

Water shortages in Kota Kinabalu have resulted in widespread criticism and protests, especially by residents in Sepanggar.
