HULU SELANGOR – Discharge from a catfish pond in Sg Tinggi here is the source of the latest pollution in Sg Selangor, which forced four water treatment plants to suspend operations this morning.
The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas), in a statement, said the pond is among 57 at a 46.1ha aquaculture farm located 8.7km from the Rantau Panjang treatment plant.
“The pollution is suspected to have been caused by discharge from one of the ponds when it was being emptied. The discharge came from two outlets that eventually ended up in Sg Selangor.”
The farm has been asked to cease all operations that produce discharge.
An investigation paper pursuant to Section 79 of the Luas Enactment 1999 has been opened against the owners of the premises.
They face a fine of between RM200,000 and RM1 million, and imprisonment of not more than three years, upon conviction. – The Vibes, December 8, 2020
