PETALING JAYA – Muda’s candidate for the Seri Setia state seat in Selangor, Dobby Chew, is getting some sympathy on Twitter following his asset declaration move.

This is after it was revealed that he only has RM174.25 in his Maybank savings account, which is the only liquid asset he has to his name.

As part of the party’s asset declaration of its election candidates ahead of the polls on 12 August, Chew stated that he has no other assets apart from a Honda Civic which is still under a Public Bank loan, RM82,951.09 in his Employees Provident Fund (EPF), and a Maybank savings account.

On Twitter, @harriszainul remarked that in his opinion, Chew’s asset declaration was the “most kesian” (pitiful).

“Brother only has RM174.25 in his account,” he wrote.

Financial author Suraya Zainudin remarked that she did not think Chew even has enough to cover his car loan instalment next month with that balance.

“Dobby Chew doesn’t have any other asset aside from a car or EPF? I don’t think he has enough to pay for next month’s car instalment also,” she wrote.

User @didiedayat commented that Chew is just a concerned rakyat who was doing his best for the country while selling socks.

The socks joke is in reference to the character Dobby in the Harry Potter franchise. Dobby is a house elf who was freed after his owner was tricked into giving him a sock which he then wore until his death.

Chew lists his profession as chief executive officer at the Anti Death Penalty Asia Network with a monthly salary of RM9,000, apart from being Muda’s human rights bureau director.

On declaring his asset, Chew said it was to ensure the rakyat would get an assemblyman who is transparent, sincere and with integrity.

He then called upon his opponents in Seri Setia – Pakatan Harapan’s Dr Fahmi Ngah, Perikatan Nasional’s Datuk Mohd Zubir Embong and independent Harindran Krishnan to also declare their assets. – The Vibes, August 4, 2023
