KUALA LUMPUR – The recommendations submitted by the Electoral Reform Committee (ERC) will be evaluated by the government, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law) Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan (PAS-Kota Baru) told the Dewan Rakyat today.
Takiyuddin said the government needs time to get views and feedback from various parties, including the Election Commission (EC).
“In this case, the government is very careful and realistic about implementing and improving the electoral system for the benefit of the people,” he said in response to a question from Khoo Poay Tiong (PH-Kota Melaka).
He added that the ERC has listed a staggered action plan and among them is to create a coordinating body or special committee to monitor each action it has recommended.
He said the committee will review the ERC findings before they are presented to the public.
“I believe this report will be presented to all MPs and, if there is a need, it can be discussed.”
The ERC was established by the Pakatan Harapan government in August 2018 to review existing electoral systems and laws.
The main task of the ERC is to submit proposals and recommendations to ensure that elections in Malaysia are conducted in accordance with standards achieved by developed democracies and to gain the public's full trust.
The ERC, chaired by Tan Sri Ab Rashid Ab Rahman, submitted its full report to Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on August 27.
It lists 49 recommendations on improvements in the system, processes and laws related to national elections. – The Vibes, December 14, 2020
