PUTRAJAYA – Datuk Rahmat Mohamad has given his resignation as chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia, or Suhakam, effective Thursday.

He will continue chairing the advisory board of the Asian International Arbitration Centre for the 2023-2025 session.

The appointment was made by Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, who is minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for law and institutional reform, only last Wednesday.

The legal affairs division of the Prime Minister’s Department announced in a statement that Rahmat’s appointment coincided with his background in the field of international law as well as his experience as the fifth secretary-general of the Asian African Legal Consultative Organisation.

“In ensuring Suhakam’s governance runs smoothly during this transition session, the government will appoint an interim chairman in the near future to carry out the duties of chairman until a new chairman is appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” said the division today.

Rahmat had been appointed Suhakam chairman for the 2022-2025 session.

It was earlier reported that Rahmat had filed a suit against the commission’s deputy secretary Shahizad Sulaiman last May.

This came on the heels of Shahizad having filed an official internal complaint on April 10 against Rahmat regarding alleged racial discrimination and misuse of power. – The Vibes, August 28, 2023
