KUALA LUMPUR – The Higher Education Ministry is targeting a rate of 75% graduate marketability next year, said Minister Datuk Noraini Ahmad.
She said the figure was settled on after taking into account the Covid-19 pandemic, which has affected the country’s economy.
“The target also takes into account the expected unemployment rate issued by the Statistics Department,” she said when winding up the debate on the Supply Bill 2021 for the ministry in the Dewan Rakyat today.
The allocation for the ministry was later approved at the committee stage through a voice vote.
Earlier, several MPs who took part in the debate raised the issue of graduate marketability, including Shaharizukirnain Abd Kadir (PAS-Setiu), Sabri Azit (PAS-Jerai) and Datuk Mohd Fasiah Mohd Fakeh (Bersatu-Sabak Bernam).
The Education Ministry’s budget, too, was approved at the committee stage through a voice vote, after 17 lawmakers took part in the debate.
Among them were Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (independent-Langkawi), Maszlee Malik (independent-Simpang Renggam), Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid (BN-Padang Terap) and Teo Nie Ching (PH-Kulai). – Bernama, December 15, 2020
