PUTRAJAYA – Deputy chef de mission to the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games Monteiro Gerard Clair said they are looking to revise the country’s medal target for squash.
As the squad’s medal-hope S. Sivasangari will be out of commission due to her injuries sustained in a car accident yesterday, Gerard hopes that Rachel Arnold will step up for the singles and women’s doubles category.
“We haven’t decided which player will be replacing Sivasangari. The coaches are having a meeting now to decide.
“But it will be a good experience for the player (replacing Sivasangari) to go and get the experience of playing in the Commonwealth Games,” he told the media after visiting Sivasangari at Putrajaya Hospital.
The Kedahan, who recently won her second National Championship title this month, was also named as the flagbearer for the Malaysian contingent alongside Paralympian Bonnie Bunyau Gustin.
Gerard added that they will decide in a few days of who will be replacing Sivasangari as the flagbearer.
“Everyone is in shock over what happened.
“That is why the minister (Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu) came to visit her.
“Let’s wait for the necessary steps to take place,” he said.
The Commonwealth Games is scheduled from July 28 to August 8 in Birmingham.
