KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s singles shuttler Ng Tze Yong once again proved that he is worthy of representing Malaysia in the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games as he progressed to the second round of the Malaysia Masters today.
The world number 48 defeated 31st-ranked Brian Yang of Canada 21-15, 21-15 in 46 minutes in the opening round, only to set up a clash against another higher-ranked player – fourth seed Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei – tomorrow to book a spot in the quarterfinal.
“I think I did well just now and I hope I could be more consistent for my next game.
“I am excited that I get to play amongst the top players. I will not have these many chances, so I vow to give my best tomorrow,” he told the media after his match at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil.
When asked about his strategy throughout the match, he admitted that he had caught his opponent by surprise due to his lower rank.
“All I do is focus on my match and not about winning or losing, and I do not worry about him,” he added.
Yesterday, Tze Yong came through the qualifying round after having to defeat his compatriot Yeoh Seng Zoe and Lee Dong-keun of South Korea to make it to the main draw.
Meanwhile, Soong Joo Ven could not get past the round of 32 after his opponent, China’s 41st ranked Li Shi Feng, stunned him in 43 minutes, 21-14, 21-12.
Liew Daren also went down at the hands of 13th ranked Angus Ng Ka Long of Hong Kong in a straightforward 21-17, 21-15 defeat in 37 minutes.
At the same time, Leong Jun Hao also faced a tough fight from his opponent, world number 23 Kantaphon Wangcharoen as the Thai defeated him in straight sets, 21-12, 21-18. – The Vibes, July 6, 2022
