KUALA LUMPUR – National top men’s doubles duo Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik is only one step away from claiming the Super 750 India Open for the first time.
The world number 3 pair overpowered world number 1 players Fajar Alfian-Rian Ardianto of Indonesia at the K. D. Jadhav Indoor Hall in New Delhi, India.
Aaron-Wooi Yik had trouble catching up to their aggressive opponents in the first set, 11-21.
However, the thought of losing to the Indonesians three consecutive times in the past did not deter their spirit, and they led the remaining sets with 21-15, 21-16.
At the time of writing, they will either face South Korea’s Kang Min-hyuk-Seo Seung-jae or China’s Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang.
The last time Malaysia won the men’s doubles category was in 2010 by Zakry Abdul Latif-Fairuzizuan Tazari.
Another victory was through Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah the year before.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s second representative, women’s doubles duo Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah struck out of the semis after losing to Japan’s Nami Matsuyama-Chiharu Shida, 14-21, 16-21.
Pearly-Thinaah last defeated the Japanese duo at the French Open quarterfinals. – The Vibes, January 21, 2023
