KUALA LUMPUR – The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) suffered significant damage to its facilities following heavy thunderstorms and heavy rain.
In a statement, SIC said the damage occurred after severe weather hit the Sepang district on the evening of Saturday, April 8.
“Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported and all contractors and security guards who were on duty remained unharmed.
“An initial assessment of the affected areas revealed damage including detached roof canvases, uprooted trees, and damaged billboards.
“SIC is currently evaluating the full extent of the damages from the recent incident,” they said.
The circuit said day-to-day operations will continue as usual, but certain areas of the 5.543km will remain closed until further notice as repair work continues.
SIC is currently undergoing resurfacing works at the track from turn seven to 12 as part of its homologation renewal for the year to meet FIM requirements.
Recently, the government allocated RM20 million to the circuit for infrastructure upgrades with RM10 million channelled towards the resurfacing works while the remaining funds will be used for other improvements around the facility. – The Vibes, April 10, 2023
