KUALA LUMPUR – Men’s doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi claimed second place at the Badminton Asia Championships held at the Al Nasr Club in Dubai, today.

In an electrifying match, the world-number-eight independent pair lost to India’s sixth-ranked Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty, 21-16, 17-21, 19-21.

For the record, Malaysia last won the title in 2007 through Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah.

After wrapping up the first game in under 18 minutes, the Malaysian duo continued their momentum till the second half of the second game when they were up five points, close to securing the win in straight sets.

However, that was when their opponents started to double their effort and overpowered Yew Sin-Ee Yi in an hour and seven minutes.

Tonight’s match marks the Malaysians’ fourth loss to the Indian pair in seven meetings.

Yew Sin-Ee Yi have been under the tutelage of former Badminton Association of Malaysia women’s doubles coach, Rosman Razak, since January.

Rosman posted an apology on Instagram for not winning the title.

“Sorry Malaysia... we (did not) win today, but we will definitely bounce back and will do better next time.

“Still proud of u (Yew Sin-Ee Yi). Let’s fight again together next time.

“(Congratulations) to (the) Indian pair today. They are slightly better than us,” read the caption.

Yew Sin-Ee Yi will next compete at the BWF Sudirman Cup Finals in Suzhou, China from May 14 to 21. – The Vibes, April 30, 2023
