KUALA LUMPUR – Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky reminded his shuttlers to play with a champion mentality when competing at high-level tournaments, such as the upcoming Sudirman Cup.
Rexy said only then will they be able to improve their current form.
“I think this applies to everyone, not just us. If we only go there to hit a certain target, that would not be the right attitude.
“Everyone who goes for the tournament aimed to be the champion.
“We have to be realistic that China and Japan are strong contenders, but as long as you pour your heart out and fight with the right mindset, it would not be impossible (to win).
“So, I would like to see our team go there (Sudirman Cup) with one thing in mind, do or die. They need to go all the way and be as close as possible to be the champion,” he said.
Meanwhile, Rexy shared that the team is highly motivated ahead of the mixed team event after having spent time together away for a three-day team training camp.
He said they made it their mission to take on India after losing 1-4 to them in the Asia Mixed Team Championship in February.
“The situation this time will be different from the Thomas Cup Finals last year because we did not have a suitable (training) camp for both national and independent players, but this time they were able to come together,” he added.
Malaysia is drawn in Group C with India, Taiwan, and Australia.
Their best achievements in the biennial tournament were bronze medals at the 2009 Guangzhou and 2021 Vantaa editions.
Malaysia is scheduled to kick off their competition on Sunday against Australia. – The Vibes, May 10, 2023
