KUALA LUMPUR – The Youth and Sports Ministry today said that the RM20 million budget for the construction of drag circuits nationwide was not debated in Parliament and thus never approved.
This comes after Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the government should consider proceeding with the plan as the previous government he led had allocated the money for it.
“Parliament was dissolved by Ismail Sabri soon after he presented the budget.
“Therefore, the budget was never channelled to the ministry for the development of the drag circuits as announced,” read a statement.
The ministry added the budget was announced without engaging the ministry for the necessary data.
The RM20 million announced is insufficient for the construction of drag circuits in every state.
“The ministry is very concerned about safety and will not build a circuit just because.
“Drag circuits are a good platform for youths to participate in motorsports, but the safety of racers, fans, and all involved has to be prioritised,” the ministry said.
It said it is looking into other ways for the sport to continue in a safe and controlled environment, even though financial restraints hinder the construction of new circuits.
Among these measures are upgrades and improvements to existing facilities under the ministry, such as Sepang International Circuit and Tangkak Race Circuit in Johor.
“The ministry is also engaging the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM) to ensure operators and organisers hold events in circuits that are safe.
“This is by listing current verified permanent circuits, as well as providing minimum specifications for temporary circuits.
“The ministry, through the National Youth and Sports Department with MAM’s support, is also actively developing Motorsports Guidelines for the organisation of motorsports, especially involving drag racing events.
“The nationwide MalaysiaActive@Motorsports programme involves the organisation of races, workshops, basic motorsports training classes, and accreditation courses, through the Rakan Muda programme which will be refreshed soon.
“All these efforts are expected to boost the empowerment of motorsports development in Malaysia and benefit the youth,” the ministry said. – The Vibes, May 29, 2023
