On the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, Anwar and counterpart Modi underscores their shared resolve to strengthen bilateral ties, particularly in trade, economy, education and emerging technologies

PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held a brief but substantive meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, where both leaders renewed their commitment to elevating long-standing Malaysia–India relations.

According to Anwar, the discussion centred on expanding cooperation across several strategic domains, including economic collaboration, bilateral trade, education partnerships and new technological ventures.

“Therefore, Malaysia and India will continue to work hand in hand to diversify forms of strategic cooperation that benefit the peoples of both nations,” Anwar said in a post on Facebook.

He added that mutual confidence and respect are the foundation of the relationship, enabling both countries to unlock greater regional potential.

“Thus, with a spirit of mutual trust and respect, we are able to enhance the region’s potential as a new field of growth, while ensuring that our relationship remains strong and steadfast,” he said.

The encounter marked one of several diplomatic engagements Anwar undertook at the Johannesburg summit, aimed at strengthening Malaysia’s ties with key partners in the Global South and beyond. - November 23, 2025
