JAPAN’S Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is scheduled to speak by telephone with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday morning, a government source confirmed, shortly after Trump held discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sensitive issue of Taiwan.

Reuters reported on Tuesday that Trump is expected to brief Takaichi on the content of his call with Xi, which followed Takaichi’s earlier warning in November that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could prompt a Japanese military response.

During Monday’s conversation, Xi reportedly told Trump that Taiwan’s “return to China” forms a central component of Beijing’s vision for the global order, according to China’s official Xinhua news agency.

Following the call with Xi, Trump highlighted progress in US-China trade talks in a post on Truth Social but did not address Taiwan.

In contrast, Taiwan Premier Cho Jung-tai declared on Tuesday that for the island’s 23 million residents, a “return” to China is not an option.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara stressed the importance of stable US-China relations at a regular news conference, saying it is “extremely important for the international community, including Japan.”

He declined to comment on Xi’s reported remarks to Trump regarding Taiwan. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. - November 25, 2025
