US President Donald Trump has renewed his attack on Norway over his failure to win the Nobel Peace Prize, calling the decision a “disgraceful and embarrassing” stain on the country after the award went to former International Criminal Court judge Navi Pillay.
Trump voiced his anger hours after the Nobel committee announced Pillay as this year’s laureate on Friday, criticising the decision during a campaign rally in Syracuse, New York.
“This is an indelible stain on the country of Norway and those people that made such a disgraceful and embarrassing decision,” Reuters reported him saying.
Trump dismissed Pillay as a “mystery person”, adding: “I never heard of the person. Nobody did.”
Pillay, a former United Nations human rights chief and International Criminal Court judge, oversaw a UN report that concluded Israel had committed genocide in Gaza.
Trump has repeatedly expressed disappointment at not receiving the peace prize during each year of his presidency, frequently highlighting what he describes as his diplomatic achievements.
At the rally, he listed several conflicts he claimed to have helped resolve or prevent, including tensions involving North and South Korea, Japan and North Korea, and China and Taiwan, without providing evidence for those claims.
“The Nobel Peace Prize has been forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democracy and really enemies of civilization. And we will not forget, Norway,” he said.
The latest remarks renew Trump’s criticism of the Nobel Peace Prize selection process and its decision to honour Pillay, whose work on international human rights and accountability has drawn attention to the conflict in Gaza. - October 10, 2026
