BANGKOK – Thailand’s Office of the Private Education Commission has accepted an order from the prime minister to have private school operators cut their fees to compensate for past online services during the new Covid-19 wave.
Its secretary-general, Attapol Truektrong, said he will check if any private schools are still maintaining their fees or have duplicated any fee collection, despite the recent suspension of their on-site school services, the Thai news agency (TNA) reported.
For the schools found to have done so, the commission will order their management to make refunds or exempt overcharged fees next year to protect parents, he said.
The commission will also bar private schools from collecting school fees in advance. Some private schools collect fees as far as two years in advance as parents want to reserve placements for their children, Attapol said. He added collection of deposits are still allowed.
He also said all private schools must post their fee details on their websites. – Bernama, February 4, 2021
