JAKARTA – Three people were killed and seven others suffered broken bones with another one still buried under the rubble of a building after a 4.8-magnitude quake damaged houses on Indonesia’s resort island, Bali, today.

The epicentre of the quake, which occurred at 3.18am local time with a depth of 10km, was located 8km northwest of Karangasem district, Xinhua news agency reported citing the Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency.

The report also stated that the tremors were felt until nearby Lombok Island.

The jolt triggered no tsunami, the agency said.

Bali’s Disaster Management Agency operational unit head, Gede Adhi Tiana Putra, told Xinhua that two people were killed in Bangli district.

Meanwhile, Karangasem district reported one death and a survivor who was evacuated from the debris.

Seven people, who suffer broken bones after being hit by concrete, are being treated at a nearby clinic, he said.

Several houses were destroyed by the tremor and most of the damage was in Bangli district.

Risk assessment on the impact of the quake is still being undertaken by disaster agency officials, Gede added.

According to him, the tremor also triggered landslides. – Bernama, October 16, 2021
