SABAH’S economy expanded by RM1.1 billion or 1.34% in 2023, driven by state-led initiatives and strong multi-stakeholder collaboration.
The state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) rose from RM82.1 billion in 2022 to RM83.2 billion in 2023, reflecting steady momentum in development and economic performance, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
He attributed the growth to strategic programmes implemented under the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) roadmap, backed by targeted initiatives and close coordination between government agencies and industry stakeholders.
“This growth reflects steady momentum and positive development in Sabah’s economy,” Hajiji said while chairing the State Development Action Council (MTNg) meeting at Menara Kinabalu on Monday.
He noted that the state’s performance aligns with the national GDP growth projection of 2.5% under the federal Madani Economy Framework and demonstrates the impact of cohesive, long-term planning.
“If we continue to contribute our energy positively through close collaboration, we can realise the aspirations of our SMJ development agenda,” he added.
Hajiji urged government agencies to maintain momentum by ensuring full and effective implementation of programmes under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) and the SMJ blueprint to further stimulate economic growth and uplift livelihoods.
Looking ahead, the state has introduced a new Strategic Development Hala Tuju framework to steer Sabah’s growth under the upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), covering the period from 2026 to 2030.
“The framework incorporates existing policies, blueprints and development plans, and will include new focus areas such as the Blue Economy and other strategic initiatives under the 13MP,” he said.
Despite the encouraging data, Hajiji cautioned against complacency.
He added that 1,265 projects and programmes are scheduled for completion in Sabah this year, and stressed that implementing agencies must ensure they are delivered on time and within scope.
Sabah remains one of the highest recipients under the national budget, receiving RM6.7 billion in federal allocations for 2025.
“This proves that the voices of Sabah’s leaders and people are being heard in Putrajaya. It also reflects our seriousness in accelerating the state’s development,” Hajiji said. - April 30, 2025
