KOTA KINABALU – Qhazanah Sabah Bhd (QSB) and Celcom Axiata will be working together to develop smart solutions in government services and the digital economy.

This comes following a memorandum of understanding signed between the state investment arm and Celcom to harness the 5G broadband speeds provided by the telco.

QSB, in a statement, said both firms will plan Sabah’s Smart Initiative, which involves the digitalisation of the public sector, and the digital economy, with QSB building the digital infrastructure.

The effort will encompass the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence in e-government services, public security and safety, e-learning, as well as the digital economy, QSB chief executive officer Ahmad Rizal Dahli said.

“This in turn will contribute positively to the people by creating employment opportunities,” he added.

Rizal said the MoU would pave the way to establish Sabah as the region’s smart-sustainable city model.

“With our group solid footing and vast experience in developing the digital infrastructure in the State as well as a support system for telecommunications facilities, we anticipate that this collaboration with Celcom will enhance our group’s capabilities as Sabah’s investment company, which in turn will benefit the government and people,” he said.

QSB was represented at the signing by Rizal, while Celcom chief operating officer (technology) and chief enterprise business officer Afizulazha Abdullah signed the agreement on the telco’s behalf.

Celcom had previously showcased smart city technology and provided innovative industrial solutions, following the commencement of its 5G trial demonstration in Langkawi in 2017.

Afizulazha said Celcom will be establishing a similar pilot project in the state, with the groundwork scheduled to kick off this year.

“We are confident the collaboration will boost capacity building from both sides, particularly in knowledge transfer in the usage of high-end technology digital applications.” – The Vibes, May 26, 2022
