KUALA LUMPUR – Employees Provident Fund (EPF) chief executive Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan has been appointed as the chairman of Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd (MRCB), following the passing of Tan Sri Azlan Zainol on January 12.  

In a bourse filing, yesterday, MRCB stated that Amir Hamzah’s appointment is a redesignation from his previous post as the group’s non-executive director since September 1, 2021.  

The 56-year-old also holds 667 ordinary shares in MRCB as stated in the filing.

At present EPF holds a 36.21% stake in MRCB, making the provident fund a controlling shareholder of the public-listed company.

Prior to embarking on a successful corporate career, Amir Hamzah graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Management (majored in finance and economics) from Syracuse University in New York, United States in addition to completing an executive programme from Stanford University.

He then began his career in the Shell group of companies, serving for 10 years in various capacities before he was appointed as president and chief executive of MISC Bhd in January 2009. 

His other stints included being appointed as Petronas Dagangan Bhd managing director and chief executive in June 2010; Petronas Lubricants International group managing director and chief executive while simultaneously serving as the vice-president of downstream marketing in August 2012; and eventually the vice-president of lubricants for the Petronas group. 

Amir Hamzah subsequently joined Ekuiti Nasional Bhd as managing director and chief executive of its investee company Icon Offshore Bhd in 2016, after which he was appointed to Khazanah Nasional Bhd’s subsidiary Themed Attractions Resorts and Hotel Sdn Bhd as its group chief executive. 

In 2019, he was appointed Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s president and chief executive prior to his current designation as EPF chief executive. – The Vibes, January 20, 2023
