SPILT Gravy on Rice, a dark comedy movie based on the acclaimed play of the same name by the late great Jit Murad, will finally be seen in cinemas after more than a decade of production and editing.
Director and actor Datuk Zahim Albakri began production on Spilt Gravy on Rice in June 2011 with a screenplay from Murad, Zahim and FiveArts producer June Tan.
Featuring a cast of local actors and comedians such as Harith Iskander, Sean Ghazi, Juliana Ibrahim, and Bernice Chauly, it tells the story of an ageing patriarch (veteran actor Datuk Rahim Razali) who gathers five estranged children for a dinner and to resolve lingering family strife, as he realises that his time to live is dwindling.
Originally set for release back in 2013, it did not meet the approval of the Film Censorship Board (LPF) because of some of the controversial subject matter that comes up over the course of the film.
The next seven years had Zahim and his team submitting multiple edits of the film to pass the censorship board, meeting with futility, until it was given a PG-13 rating in March 2020.
Unfortunately, this coincided with the start of the Covid-19 pandemic and the implementation of lockdowns and the movement control order.
Sadly, Jit passed away on February 12 this year from a heart attack at 62 years of age.
His career on stage spanned from Caught in The Middle in 1987 up to One Load of Bull Jit in 2009. Throughout the decades he also made many appearances in movies, such as Mat Gelap, Selubung, Mimpi Moon, among others.
