KOTA BARU – Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) will offer a Foundation in Information and Communication Technology-Tahfiz (FICT) programme to Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) holders who took tahfiz al-Quran at the school level.

UMK board of directors chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Fatmi Che Salleh said the first intake of the programme is expected in the June 2023/2024 semester after receiving approval from the Higher Education Ministry.

He said the study programme through the Data Science Department would take a year or two semesters.

“UMK also offers several courses on tahfiz al-Quran and fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) in Quran verses. Apart from that, the FICT curriculum also takes into account the integration between Quran knowledge and ICT in some of the courses offered,” he said at a press conference here today.

Fatmi said the entry requirement for the programme is a pass for SPM holders from Maahad Tahfiz, Maahad Sains Tahfiz, secondary schools run by Yayasan Islam Kelantan (YIK), religious secondary schools and other relevant schools.

He said priority would be given to students from B40 families.

“Students must obtain at least three Cs or credit in Bahasa Melayu and Mathematics as the admission requirements states.

“They also need to have memorised at least five chapters of the Quran and passed an interview,” he said.

Meanwhile, UMK is giving a fee discount of 78% to students who follow industrial training, effective immediately.

“About 2,500 UMK students undergo industrial training every year. This step is among UM’s initiatives to help students, especially in the current situation of the rising cost of living,” he said. – Bernama, June 28, 2022
