THE driver of the tour bus involved in a crash that killed two passengers last Saturday (June 29) claimed trial at the Raub magistrates’ court today, reported the New Straits Times.

S. Anand Kumar, 32, pleaded not guilty to two offences when the charges were read before magistrate Siti Aishah Ahmad.

He was charged under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death due to reckless or dangerous driving and Section 26(1) for driving without a valid licence.

In the incident, the tour bus, which was descending from Genting Highlands, overturned, killing two Chinese nationals – Zhang Ping, 58, and Wang Shuhong, 49 – and injuring 19 others.

Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Zamharir Muhammad Zuhid appeared for the prosecution while Anand was not represented.

It was earlier reported that the driver does not have a driving licence and has a record of traffic violations.

Bentong police chief Zaiham Mohd Kahar said further investigation into the 32-year-old bus driver revealed that he had 27 previous traffic summonses for various offences. – July 3, 2024
