PRIME Minister Anwar Ibrahim today announced a 15% pay raise for civil servants under the management and professional category and a 7% salary increase for those in upper management.
The pay raise, said Anwar, would be given to civil servants in two phases.
For civil servants under the management and professional category, officers would receive an 8% raise in the first phase of implementation on December 1 and a 7% raise in the second phase on January 1, 2026.
Civil servants in the upper management category would receive a 4% raise in the first phase on December 1 and a 3% raise in the second phase on January 1, 2026.
“We hope this will motivate the civil service to strive for the best for the nation,” said Anwar.
The prime minister hoped the increase in pay would suffice to address skyrocketing inflation.
“Before this, 12 years ago, civil servants only received a 5.8% hike, whereas inflation was 21%.
“I know that for civil servants below grade 46, it is very tough,” Anwar added.
Anwar also warned that the pay hike would only be granted to civil servants who performed well.
“Those who are slow, lazy, and negligent will not be guaranteed raises, even if they have been in the civil service for 20 years,” he said.
“Those who perform well will receive raises, even if they have been in the civil service for less than 10 years. I hope all public servants accept this reality. We can no longer continue with old practices,” he said at the 19th Civil Service Premier Assembly at Putrajaya International Convention Centre.
Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said the government had allocated more than RM10 billion for the salary adjustment, which would be applicable to all civil servants. – August 16, 2024.
