THE Penang music scene suffered a loss yesterday when local musician Ray Raymond Rozells died, just hours after being discharged from Adventist Hospital to spend his final days at home.
Rozells, 75, was regarded as one of the local legends of Penang, which once produced a steady stream of talents. His contemporaries included local groups such as Alleycats and Sweet September, and Melbourne-based folk singer Jimmy Fong.
What distinguished Rozells from others was his global reach, particularly in the United States, where he earned citizenship after spending most of his adult life performing in the Las Vegas strip, Los Angeles, and New York.
A versatile performer with a wide vocal range, Rozells captivated audiences, performing as recently as three months ago at the Chili Head in Straits Quay, despite his declining health.
Known for his cheerful demeanour, Rozells showed remarkable resilience, returning to the stage in 2019 just weeks after suffering a heart attack in Penang.
Adrian Rajamoney, a friend and fan, said Rozells chose to stay in his birthplace after returning to Penang more than a decade ago for his mother's funeral. Alongside his devoted wife, Rita, the St Xavier's Institution alumnus revived the local entertainment scene, remaining in high demand for private and public events, performing before government dignitaries and corporate leaders.
Fondly known as "Uncle" due to his age, Rozells performed with drummer Jasmi Budin and guitarist Christopher James Estrop.
He will be dearly missed, said fellow Xavierian Jeffery Chew.
