THE government may end subsidies for chicken eggs once supply stabilises, said agriculture and food security minister Mohamad Sabu.
According to reports in Sinar Harian, he said the savings from the subsidy cuts would be used to develop other agro-food sectors in need.
"In my opinion, it is time for the ministry to reevaluate the subsidy given for chicken eggs grade A, B and C," Mohamad, also known as Mat Sabu, was quoted as saying at his ministry’s monthly assembly.
It was reported that the government spent RM 927 million on subsidies for chicken eggs last year.
Last June, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a drop of 3 cents in the retail price of grade A, B and C chicken eggs nationwide.
Anwar said that the move involved a subsidy of 10 sen for a chicken egg involving an expenditure of RM100 million. - October 9, 2024
