PARTI Warisan has bigger priorities than coalition deals, its leader Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said in response to claims that it may go alone in the looming Sabah election next year.
Shafie maintained Warisan’s loyalty lies with the people of Sabah above any political arrangement but still left the doors open to working with a local political force that aligns with the party mission.
"Our commitment to championing the welfare and rights of Sabahans stands above coalition deals," he declared.
“The people of Sabah face a mountain of challenges in economic opportunity, healthcare, and education, which continue to hold them back,” said Shafie, stressing on his party’s resolve to address these areas.
“In an increasingly dynamic political landscape, we’re open to collaborating with any local political party that shares our desire to prioritise the interest of the people of Sabah and address their needs,” he added.
Shafie’s comments come on the heels of Barisan Nasional’s (BN) decision to align with Pakatan Harapan (PH) for the upcoming state poll.
Warisan and BN had floated the idea of working together, but it appears both have other plans now.
Political analysts suggest that Warisan’s likely independent run could shake up the electoral race, setting up multi-cornered fights that could splinter the Sabah vote.
One observer also says this approach could also help Warisan maintain its identity as a Sabah-centric party.
“We believe partnerships with like-minded parties can strengthen Sabah’s voice and create a united front to tackle the state’s unique challenges.
“But Warisan’s commitment to Sabah’s autonomy and progress will never falter. We’re always prepared to work with any party that truly puts Sabah and her people first,” said Shafie. - November 1, 2024
