THE widow of Tun Daim Zainuddin has insisted that the criminal charge against him go for a full trial, confident that he will be exonerated.
In a statement, Toh Puan Na’imah Abdul Khalid said that Daim, before his passing, had expressed a strong desire for the case against him to proceed to its conclusion, confident of his eventual acquittal.
She said this is because the investigation that went on for over a year was "frivolous, malicious and politically motivated".
"That it is baseless is clear from the fact that neither the Prime Minister nor MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki... has been able to say if Daim had committed any offence, as there isn't any," she said.
The statement comes after newly minted Attorney General (AG) Datuk Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar said he would review the ongoing prosecution of the former finance minister, following his death last week.
Daim, 86, passed away at the Assunta Hospital in Petaling Jaya at 8.41 am on Wednesday, Nov 13.
A well-known finance minister and businessman, and a former Umno treasurer, Daim was pivotal in steering the country twice out of recession in the 1990s.
Na'imah stressed that there was no need for the Attorney-General (AG) or the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki to review, discontinue, or withdraw the prosecution against Daim.
"We do not seek it," she added.
Since the MACC's investigation began over a year and a half ago, Na'imah reiterated that they had consistently maintained that the case against Daim was baseless, politically motivated, and malicious.
She said she had instructed her legal team to formally notify the AG of their intention to proceed with the trial and inform the Sessions Court accordingly.
“I have instructed my solicitors to write to the AG to give notice of our resolve in this matter,” she said.
“My counsel will accordingly inform the KL Sessions Court of our determination that the trial be proceeded with when the matter resumes on the 20th of November 2024," she added. - November 19, 2024
