THE RM10 million allocated to rebuild homes destroyed by a massive fire in Kampung Kurnia Jaya nearly three years ago is being held by the Tawau local government.
Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) President Joseph Pang confirmed that the funds remain untouched, citing it was held as the council still awaits additional funding to ensure the reconstruction is carried out properly.
“Our priority is to ensure the reconstruction is done in an organized and systematic manner, including proper electricity and water supply,” Pang said in a statement.
He added that Apas assemblyman Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan has submitted a formal request to the Prime Minister’s Office for additional funds to expedite the project.
The fire on March 17, 2022, destroyed over 700 houses and displaced more than 1,000 individuals.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor announced the RM10 million special allocation during his visit to the site on April 6, 2022.
Hajiji said the funds were meant to help villagers rebuild their homes and ease their burden.
However, nearly three years later, many residents are still living in makeshift conditions, frustrated by the lack of progress.
Retiree Kenneth Tahir, who was among those affected, said he had to borrow RM5,000 from a moneylender to construct a temporary shelter after years of waiting for assistance.
Housewife Dahlia Hamsail recalled receiving some immediate cash aid after the fire but nothing was forthcoming to rebuild her home.
“Many of us don’t know why it’s taking so long. The funds were meant to help us, but we’re still waiting,” she said.
Pang clarified that the land in Kampung Kurnia Jaya is state-owned and has been handed over to MPT.
However, the council has allowed the area to serve as a temporary settlement out of goodwill, following advice from Nizam. - January 26, 2025.
