POLICE successfully uncovered the existence of a premises believed to be used as a location to store and process electronic waste or e-waste illegally worth millions of ringgit through Op Hazard in Lorong Pengkalan Indah, Bukit Tengah in Bukit Mertajam, at about 11.55 am yesterday.
Acting Central Seberang Perai District Police Chief, Superintendent Norazizi Saad, said the premises were discovered following a raid carried out jointly with several other agencies, including the Penang Department of Environment (DOE), Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) and the Inland Revenue Board (IRB).
“Further inspection by the state DOE later found about 80 e-waste pressed blocks and eight jumbo bags containing computer components and motherboards.
“Samples of the material were also taken for analysis and verification under the scheduled waste code, and the case will be investigated under Section 18(1) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974,” he said.
He added that MBSP also issued two compounds against the owners of the premises involved for carrying out storage activities without a valid license.
Meanwhile, Norazizi said that in the same operation, the police also detained 11 foreigners aged between 26 and 59 to assist in the investigation.
“Initial investigations found that 10 of them were suspected of violating the pass conditions, while another was believed not to have valid travel documents.
"All those arrested have been remanded for 14 days starting yesterday until July 20 for further investigation under the Immigration Act 1959/63," he said. – July 8, 2026
