THE role to shape a digitally driven future has never been more crucial especially since Malaysia assumed the ASEAN Chairmanship this year. Under the leadership of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the MADANI government is committed to fostering a competitive, future-ready Malaysia.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, while speaking at the Digital Leadership Excellence (DLE) Graduation Ceremony in Kuala Lumpur today, said: “When the government, industry, and academia unite, we create a strong ecosystem for innovation, talent development, and national progress—ensuring Malaysia remains competitive on the global stage.”
Fahmi, at the Digital Leadership Excellence (DLE) graduation ceremony for the first cohort, themed ‘Navigating the Tech Frontier programme 2024,’ said the programme reflects this commitment, equipping digital leaders to drive innovation and impact.
“Through initiatives like the DLE Programme, we strengthen our global competitiveness while advancing ASEAN’s inclusive and sustainable growth.
Fahmi explained, together, the unit tackled digital transformation challenges and national priorities delivering real-world impact, on such projects as:
i. The AI National Higher Education Hub project - Piloted by Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), this initiative aims to establish Malaysia as a leading hub for AI education, with recognition as AI Halal Centre of Excellence in the region by 2030, and globally by 2035;
ii. The ESG Adoption for Malaysian SME Sustainability project - This initiative equips SMEs with the tools to learn, assess, and implement ESG strategies through a Digital ESG ecosystem. With seed funding from various government agencies, it reflects the government’s commitment to driving nationwide ESG adoption and sustainability; and
iii. Several other initiatives were also developed, focusing on workforce upskilling, public service transformation, and smart mobility solutions—each playing a role in advancing Malaysia’s digital and economic progress.
“These projects go beyond theory—offering practical solutions that can drive economic growth, sustainability, and efficiency. Your work reflects the kind of leadership Malaysia needs—bold, strategic, and impactful.”
“I strongly encourage leaders across the public and private sectors to seize this opportunity and be part of future DLE cohorts. This programme is more than just a learning experience—it is a transformative journey that equips you with the skills, insights, and connections needed to drive real-world impact.
“We aim to create a robust digital infrastructure, promote inclusive access to technology, and cultivate a thriving ecosystem for innovation and entrepreneurship. And, initiatives like the DLE programme play a crucial role in strengthening Malaysia’s leadership in the global digital economy.”
This programme was made possible through the MoU between MCMC and Huawei, signed at the Mobile World Congress 2024, which laid the foundation for a three-year collaboration to develop 300 digital leaders who will help steer Malaysia’s digital and economic transformation.
The first cohort, which began in May 2024, successfully concluded in November 2024. Over six months, 50 leaders from the public and private sectors, as well as academia, engaged in workshops, industry visits, and capstone projects.
The Ministry of Communications will continue to support initiatives that empower leaders, foster digital inclusion, and drive technological progress, Fahmi added. – February 17, 2025
