PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed strong optimism about the future of Malaysia’s tax collection, commending the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) for its improved performance and the introduction of new systems that have significantly enhanced efficiency.

Speaking after attending the 29th “Hari HASiL” celebration, Anwar highlighted the board’s achievements, noting that Malaysia’s direct tax collection reached RM184.805 billion in 2024, a notable increase of RM1.465 billion from RM183.34 billion collected in 2023.

“I am optimistic. First, I was very impressed with the performance of Hasil over the last few years, particularly last year.

“The system is now more organised and structured, with new tools such as the e-invoice contributing to this success,” Anwar remarked, acknowledging the positive impact of technological advancements on the board’s work.

Anwar stressed with the current high standards and disciplined approach, IRB is poised to further improve its performance and significantly contribute to the nation’s revenue.

“If they maintain that level of standard and discipline, they will be able to collect much more,” he added.

The Prime Minister also addressed the issue of tax compliance, stressing that no group, particularly the ultra-rich, should be exempt from fulfilling their civic duty to pay taxes.

"No one, especially the ultra-wealthy, should be given an opportunity to avoid their responsibilities as citizens in paying taxes," he stated, reinforcing the need for strong enforcement and leadership support to ensure tax obligations are met.

In line with these efforts, IRB will launch the MyInvois e-POS system, a free digital platform aimed at assisting taxpayers with annual sales or income below RM250,000.

Furthermore, in alignment with the MyDigital ID initiative, IRB has also introduced this as a Single Sign-On (SSO) for accessing both the MyTax system starting January 1, 2025, and the Rahmah Cash Assistance System (STR) from March 1, 2025.

The implementation of these digital initiatives is expected to streamline tax processes, making compliance easier for the public while also enhancing transparency and efficiency within Malaysia's tax system. – March 10, 2024
