Nurul Izzah joins race for PKR vice-presidency
Izzah announced her decision to contest at an event in Desa Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur - March 15, 2025

NURUL Izzah Anwar will be contesting for one of the vice-presidencies in the May PKR elections.

Announcing her decision at an event in Desa Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur, she said it is her desire to nurture and celebrate talent within the party, emphasising that regeneration must begin at the grassroots level.

“I believe there is a need to celebrate the talents within the party by ensuring the regeneration process starts from the grassroots.

“Therefore, I am offering my services as vice-president, and I hope that party members will grant me the opportunity to undertake this responsibility in accordance with the concept of fardu kifayah (the principle of communal responsibility in Islam),” she said.

Izzah said the upcoming party election serves as an  early preparation for PKR ahead of the 16th general election.

“We want to ensure that a sense of togetherness prevails in our collective effort to unite hearts and provide the best talents with the space and opportunity — not merely to be candidates, but to contribute meaningfully to the party,” she added.

Izzah stepped down as vice-president in December 2018, attributing her decision to disgruntlement with individuals who were constantly politicking.

However, in July 2022, she was reappointed to the position for the 2022-2025 term.

Recently, Izzah was also appointed to lead Penang PKR as part of the party's restructuring exercise involving several states.

So far, Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun and Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad have also announced their intention to defend their vice-president positions.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has also announced that he will defend his position as one of the PKR vice presidents.

PKR’s four elected vice-presidents are Aminuddin, Amirudin, Nik Nazmi and Chang Lih Kang, who is the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation

Deputy National Unity Minister Saraswathy Kandasamy, Putatan MP Awang Husaini Awang Sahari and Izzah are the three appointed vice-presidents.

PKR has set May 24 for elections to its Central Leadership Council (MPP), Women’s Leadership Council (MPWP), and Youth Leadership Council (MPAMKP).

Party secretary-general Fuziah Salleh previously announced that elections for division-level positions, including the Women’s and Youth wings, will be held from April 11 to 20. – March 15, 2025
