CONTROVERSIAL preacher Zamri Vinoth has been arrested and the Classified Crime Investigation Unit (USJT) has opened a sedition investigation in connection with social media posts Zamri allegedly made.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain recently said 894 reports have been lodged against Zamri for allegedly insulting Hindus,

“The investigation paper is still under review by the AGC, and no further directives have been issued,” he had said.

In a Facebook post, Zamri had remarked that Hindu worshippers performing the kavadi ritual said “Vel Vel” while appearing to be possessed or drunk.

His remarks followed a controversy surrounding three Era FM radio deejays who were  criticised for mocking the Hindu kavadi ritual.

It is learnt that the preacher’s arrest was also related to the relocation of the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman temple in Kuala Lumpur.

The case has been  classified under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for uttering seditious words and misuse of network facilities.

According to reports, Zamri is now detained at the Padang Besar police headquarters’ lockup, and will be brought to the Kangar court tomorrow to be remanded.

Razarudin again urged Malaysians to refrain from touching on 3R issues (race, religion, royalty) which could lead to public anxiety and threaten national harmony.

He warned that stern action would be taken against those who intentionally touched on these issues. - March 27, 2025
