A WOMAN lodged a report after claiming her elder brother, who suffers from schizophrenia, was treated inhumanely by the neighbourhood children in Kubur Panjang, Pendang, Kedah.

Nor Zaihan Muhamad Yusof, 29, said her 40-year-old brother often becomes a victim of harassment, including the latest incident where several children were accused of urinating on him.

She said her brother was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of six.

"Society should be more sensitive and respectful towards individuals with mental illnesses and the families who care for them.

"More disappointing, the perpetrators are underage children who behaved rudely in front of their own parents," she told Sinar Harian.

Nor Zaihan shared in Facebook that her family has been trying to take care of him as best they could.

She said that their family also ensured the gate was always locked and the room windows are reinforced with safety grills.

"However, the neighbour’s children constantly laugh at my brother's illness and made it a subject of mockery.

"My brother has also complained about being pelted with stones, but we have no evidence.

"Recently, I saw them throw firecrackers at my brother who was sitting in the garage," she said.

She added that the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage also showed the children burning clothes hung on the fence and climbing into the compound though the gate was locked.

"In the latest incident, my mother saw them urinating on my brother's body, I consider it excessive, and that's what spurred me to lodge a report at the Kubur Panjang Police Station on April 3," she said.

Meanwhile, Pendang police chief, Rodzi Abu Hassan, when contacted by Sinar Harian, confirmed that his department received the report and investigations are ongoing. - April 9, 2025
