MALAYSIAN Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said he will leave it to the government to decide whether his contract will be extended and will accept any decision taken.
“I am someone who will accept whatever decision is made by the government,” he told reporters during a dialogue with media practitioners from Sabah on Thursday.
Azam, 62, said his appointment is made under the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s authority, based on the advice of the prime minister, in accordance with Section 5 of the MACC Act.
“So as part of the government, I am merely someone who follows orders,” he added.
Asked whether he still felt fit for the role, Azam quipped: “I’m still young,” drawing laughter from the room.
His current tenure marks the second time his contract has been extended since his initial appointment as chief commissioner in March 2020.
Recent developments have brought attention to Azam’s tenure as the MACC chief and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said no decision has been made on the matter when addressing speculation regarding an extension.
Reports had suggested that the Prime Minister was considering a six-month extension for Azam, whose term is set to expire in May.
Azam has been at the helm of the MACC since March 2020.
His contract was first extended for a year on May 10, 2023, and subsequently for another year. - April 10, 2025
