PKR polls: Rafizi secures Pandan division, shock defeat for Abdullah Sani in Kapar
Rafizi Ramli scored a decisive win which could shape Selangor’s political landscape and influence the party’s national direction ahead of the 16th General Election – April 13, 2025

ECONOMY Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has scored a decisive win in the 2025 PKR party elections, clinching the Pandan Division chief post in a highly watched contest that could shape Selangor’s political landscape and influence the party’s national direction ahead of the 16th General Election.

Of the 1,771 eligible voters in the Pandan Division, 1,334 ballots were cast. Rafizi secured a commanding 883 votes, comfortably defeating his rival Shahrom Musa, who garnered 441 votes. The strong mandate underscores grassroots support for Rafizi’s reformist agenda and reflects a clear demand for rejuvenation within the party’s leadership.

Meanwhile, in a stunning turn of events in Kapar, long-time PKR stalwart and former MP Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid was unseated in a four-way battle for the division chief post. Despite his years of service and influence in the area, Abdullah managed only 618 votes.

The division was won by Azizi Ayob, who received 1,580 votes. Other contenders included M Mathuraiveeran Marimuthu with 477 votes and Muhammad Huzaini Muhammad Rasid with 331 votes. Out of 4,660 eligible voters, 3,020 ballots were cast in Kapar.

Abdullah’s defeat is seen as a significant upset and raises questions about shifting loyalties and changing political currents at the grassroots level in one of PKR’s strongholds.

Amirudin unopposed

In Gombak, Selangor Chief Minister Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari retained his position as Division Chief unopposed. With no ballots cast from the 2,965 eligible voters, his win was confirmed automatically—affirming his continued influence and positioning within the party’s Selangor leadership.

In Klang, Azmizam Zaman Huri won the division chief post with a comfortable majority. A total of 2,329 ballots were issued out of 2,987 registered voters.

Najwan Halimi Upsets Rodziah

In Shah Alam, another major upset unfolded as Kota Anggerik assemblyman Mohd Najwan Halimi defeated incumbent Rodziah Ismail, a senior party leader and current Member of Parliament for Ampang.

From 3,307 eligible voters, 2,637 votes were cast. Najwan secured 1,213 votes, ahead of Rodziah’s 899, while a third candidate, Noryzal Zainal Abidin, obtained 513. Najwan’s victory represents a generational shift and a call for new energy within PKR’s leadership in this key Selangor division.

Najwan is widely regarded as a vocal and active figure among PKR’s youth leaders, and his win is expected to shape the party’s strategy in Shah Alam moving forward.

Shamsul Iskandar Reclaims Hang Tuah Jaya Leadership, Adam Adli defeated

Senior Political Secretary to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, returned to the helm of the Hang Tuah Jaya Division after defeating incumbent Mohd Rafee Ibrahim with 1,995 votes to 736.

However, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim failed in his bid to become deputy division chief, losing to Zamzizul Nordin by 791 votes to 1,905.

Out of 3,558 eligible voters in the division, 2,733 ballots were cast. Shamsul’s victory marks a comeback after he previously lost the same post to Mohd Rafee in 2022. He now pledges to serve for the 2025–2028 term under the theme “Keadilan Memimpin” (Justice Leads).

Previously, Shamsul served as Jasin Division Chief from 2019 to 2022 before moving to Hang Tuah Jaya. Six divisions in Melaka, including Masjid Tanah, Alor Gajah, Tangga Batu, Hang Tuah Jaya and Jasin, conducted elections on the same day.

As PKR prepares for its national congress and further leadership contests, these division-level results are likely to influence internal alignments and shape the party’s strategic direction moving into the next general election. - April 13, 2025
