The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has remanded a former Dewan Negara deputy speaker over allegations of receiving four luxury vehicles as bribes in connection with a land reclamation project in Kota Laksamana.
The six-day remand order, effective until April 20, was issued by Ayer Keroh magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohd Suleiman this morning, following an application by the MACC.
According to sources, the suspect – a man in his 60s who also serves as the managing director of a company – is believed to have received the vehicles, along with cash amounting to some RM300,000, from a company owner bearing the title Datuk.
"The alleged bribes were received between 2021 and 2023 in return for awarding a 100-acre land reclamation project to the Datuk's company," the source said.
Both individuals were arrested between 4.30pm and 5pm yesterday at the Melaka MACC office after attending to have their statements recorded.
Melaka MACC director Adi Supian Shafie confirmed the arrests, saying that the Datuk was later released on MACC bail following the recording of his statement.
The case is being investigated under Section 16(a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009, which pertains to the solicitation or receipt of gratification as an inducement. - April 14, 2025
