PKR Vice-President Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has called for patience ahead of the party’s central leadership council (MPP) election this Friday, urging observers not to speculate on the outcome or possible political ramifications.
“We wait for the party polls first,” he said at a press conference after launching the State-Level Special Committee on Human-Elephant Conflict at Bangunan Dato Jaafar Muhammad on Tuesday.
Nik Nazmi, who is also the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, was responding to a question on whether he would follow the example of Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who recently stated his willingness to step down from the Cabinet if he fails to retain his post as PKR deputy president.
On 22 April, Nik Nazmi confirmed he would defend his position as vice-president despite losing his local party contest in Setiawangsa to Datuk Afdlin Shauki.
Rafizi, meanwhile, made headlines on 10 May when he declared his readiness to resign from the Cabinet should he lose the deputy presidency, although he stressed he would continue serving as the Member of Parliament for Pandan and would remain active in national discourse.
Asked to comment on fellow vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar’s warning that internal party conflicts could spell the downfall of PKR within the next five to ten years, Nik Nazmi declined to elaborate. - May 20, 2025
