DATUK Seri Amirudin Shari has dismissed speculation that Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz is poised to take over his position as Menteri Besar of Selangor following the latter’s departure from UMNO and his declared intention to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).
“The Menteri Besar remains. That’s one of the prayers I asked Tengku Zafrul to make for me. He’s leaving for Mecca today,” Amirudin said when asked about the rumours after officiating the 2025 Selangor-level MyLesen (B2) licence handover event in Selayang.
The PKR Vice President also said there is no need to hold a by-election to facilitate Zafrul’s entry into the Selangor State Legislative Assembly, and that he does not foresee vacating his seat to move to federal politics.
“I don’t see any reason for a by-election, or for me to leave for the federal government and vacate my seat. We only have about two and a half years left in this term.
“There’s not much that can be reorganised, in my view. But of course, we’ll have to monitor further developments. This kind of speculation has been going on for quite some time,” he added.
Amirudin also said he looked forward to continued cooperation with Tengku Zafrul, especially if the latter officially joins PKR, given their longstanding working relationship in state-federal matters.
“As Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, he has worked closely with us, particularly in sectors like aerospace and semiconductors.
“So if he becomes a member of the same party, I believe the collaboration will be even stronger,” he said. - May 31, 2025
