THE Ministry of Transport has directed Prasarana Malaysia Berhad to install platform screen doors at all Light Rail Transit (LRT) stations to enhance commuter safety, following the recent death of a Taiwanese passenger at a Selangor station.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the directive was necessary as several LRT stations, particularly those built under older designs such as on the Ampang Line, have yet to be fitted with safety doors.
“In terms of safety measures, I have instructed Prasarana to plan the installation of platform screen doors at all LRT stations,” he said at a press conference today.
“For new Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations, such doors are already in place. The monorail has also been upgraded. But for LRT Ampang and other stations with older designs, platform doors are still missing,” he added.
Loke was commenting on the death of a 63-year-old Taiwanese man who is believed to have fallen onto the tracks at the Pusat Bandar Puchong LRT station on Tuesday.
The minister confirmed that he had received a report on the incident and said police would lead the investigation.
“We know it was an accident, but we are leaving it to the Royal Malaysia Police to investigate further. CCTV footage will be handed over to facilitate their inquiry,” he said.
Loke also noted that Prasarana, with the assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra), will follow up with the victim’s family.
