THE special meeting between Thailand and Cambodia began at the Seri Perdana Complex at 3.15 pm today to discuss a ceasefire over the ongoing conflict.

The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the ASEAN chair and also involved Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.

The session was also attended by the United States (US) Ambassador Edgard D Kagan and the Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, Ouyang Yujing, reported Berita Harian.

Anwar had last week proposed a peace agreement between the two sides following the recent border conflict.

Tensions have been rising since the May 28 incident when Cambodian and Thai troops clashed in the Preah Vihear area.

For decades, the two ASEAN members have been embroiled in a long-running dispute over their 817-kilometer border that has yet to be resolved.

However, the situation turned into a bloody conflict in northern Cambodia last week.

The two sides, which had previously shown hostility, finally agreed to negotiate following mounting pressure from the international community, including the United Nations (UN) and the United States (US).

Previously, US President Donald Trump announced that the two governments had agreed to hold talks to discuss the implementation of a ceasefire in the near future. - July 28, 2025
