THE Road Transport Department (JPJ) will carry out a Safety Inspection and Audit (JISA) on the bus operator involved in the crash at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) on Saturday, which left several schoolchildren and a teacher injured.
JPJ Director-General Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli confirmed that the department had received a report on the incident and would take further action once the audit findings are available.
“Yes, we have received the report, and the case is currently being investigated by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM),” he said on Sunday.
“JPJ will conduct a JISA on the bus operator and take subsequent action based on the audit report,” he added.
The accident, which occurred around 12.18pm, involved a bus transporting 30 children and five teachers from Pusat Asuhan Tunas Islam (PASTI) Ampang. The group was travelling from a chocolate factory to the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) when the vehicle veered off Jalan Persiaran Universiti 1 and struck a tree.
Serdang District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the 44-year-old local driver is believed to have dozed off at the wheel due to a lack of rest.
“The driver admitted to being sleep-deprived, which led to him falling asleep during the journey,” Muhamad Farid said in a statement.
“He was remanded for two days to assist in investigations. Preliminary tests confirmed he was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”
Police are investigating the case under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.
The crash resulted in injuries to three children and one teacher, all of whom were given medical attention. - August 3, 2025
