A YOUNG mother faced a terrifying moment when she had to give birth on the side of the road near the traffic lights in Taman Bukit Dahlia, Pasir Gudang, Johor, yesterday.
It is understood that the woman, believed to be from Sabah, was riding a motorcycle with her husband when she suddenly suffered severe cramps at about 2pm. She then got off and lay down on the side of the road, before being helped by the public.
The baby boy was born safely, while the mother is currently being treated at the Sultan Ismail Hospital (HSI). The baby is reported to be in good health.
Housewife Syarifah Munawwarah Sayed Muhammad, 36, who also helped, said the incident occurred when she and her husband stopped at the traffic lights.
"At that time, there was a Malay woman stroking the mother's head and another Indian woman helping. The Indian woman's husband called me for help because others were afraid and did not dare.
"I offered to help, and umbrellas were placed around the woman to avoid public view.
"When I arrived, the young mother had already pushed halfway, we encouraged her, and the baby came out safely. None of us had expertise in this field, so I contacted a nurse friend to ask for guidance because I did not dare to cut the umbilical cord.
"My friend advised that the umbilical cord be tied, we had no other choice given the situation on the side of the road and the drizzle. We tied the umbilical cord using the shoelace of a food delivery man who also helped," she said.
Syarifah said an ambulance was immediately called to take the mother and baby to the hospital.
