A 52-YEAR-OLD man has been remanded for seven days starting Saturday, following his arrest in connection with the armed robbery of Tan Sri Dzulkifli Abdul Razak, former Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

The remand order was issued by Magistrate Siti Nur Suhaila Baharin to facilitate further police investigations under Section 394 of the Penal Code.

The suspect, wearing a red shirt and handcuffed, arrived at court at approximately 9.35am under police escort.

Penang Police Chief Datuk Azizee Ismail confirmed the suspect was detained around 2.30pm on Friday in the Bayan Lepas area. He added that the suspect has 13 previous records related to drug offences and three other criminal convictions.

Police received an emergency call at 7.01am on Friday following an assault that occurred at 6.45am involving a 74-year-old local man.

“The victim, who had just returned from the mosque, noticed the suspect hiding beside his house. When approached, the suspect suddenly brandished a black object and attacked him,” Azizee said in a statement.

The victim, who is also a former Rector of the International Islamic University Malaysia (UIAM), sustained 16 stitches to his head as a result of the assault.

The suspect fled by climbing over the victim’s fence after the victim screamed for help. Although neighbours attempted to pursue the suspect, they were unsuccessful. - October 18, 2025
