PRIME MINISTER Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held a brief meeting with United States President Donald Trump, shortly before the latter departed for Tokyo following a visit to Malaysia for the ASEAN Summit.

Anwar said the discussion provided an opportunity to review the outcomes of earlier Malaysia–US bilateral engagements, particularly in strategic areas such as trade, technology and regional security.

"I also conveyed my deep appreciation to President Trump for his instrumental role in advancing the KL Peace Accord and the Gaza Peace Plan, both of which serve as beacons of hope towards achieving a just and lasting peace," Anwar said in a Facebook post.

Trump, who arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday to attend the 13th ASEAN–United States Summit, also held several bilateral meetings with regional leaders during his visit.

The US president witnessed the signing of a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, aimed at resolving a long-standing border dispute.

The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, hosted by Malaysia under the theme ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’, focused on strengthening regional integration, deepening economic cooperation and addressing global challenges, including peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

Brazil Backs Malaysia’s Full BRICS Membership Bid

Meanwhile, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has declared Brazil’s support for Malaysia’s bid for full BRICS membership.

"I learned in my life that human behaviour is always taken into account; the main thing, and the rest is secondary. You asked me if I want Malaysia to be a full member of BRICS. Well, I would like to say to you that Malaysia will have the support of Brazil to be a full member of BRICS," Lula said at a recent press conference.

Malaysia first expressed interest in joining BRICS in mid-2024, with Anwar noting that the bloc’s objectives aligned with Malaysia’s commitment to multipolar engagement and inclusive global governance.

The country formally submitted its expression of interest in July 2024 and became an official BRICS partner nation on 1 January 2025, following the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia.

Earlier in September, Anwar said China had also pledged to support Malaysia’s bid for full BRICS membership, adding that the move would further strengthen the country’s role on the global stage. - October 27, 2025
