POLICE have detained eight local men suspected of operating an illegal bitcoin mining operation in Taman Lagenda near Teluk Intan, Perak, authorities confirmed yesterday.

Hilir Perak District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin, said the arrests followed a special operation conducted on 5 November to crack down on unlawful mining activities.

“During the investigation, we seized two four-wheel-drive vehicles, a Toyota Hilux and a Mitsubishi Triton, along with 40 bitcoin mining machines believed to have been used to steal electricity,” he said.

Dr Bakri added that all suspects, aged between 17 and 44, admitted to their involvement in the operation.

The men have been remanded for three days starting today under Section 427 of the Penal Code and Section 37 of the Electricity Supply Act 1990.

He further explained that the illegal mining network was uncovered during a coordinated raid at a premises in Taman Lagenda between 2pm and 6.30pm on 5 November, carried out in collaboration with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM).

“During the raid, we seized an additional 66 bitcoin mining machines, several modems, and supporting equipment,” Dr Bakri said. - November 9, 2025
