THE government has assured the public that all agencies are on full alert following the onset of the northeast monsoon yesterday.

Minister of Communications Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said during a post-Cabinet press conference  on Friday that Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had confirmed the government’s preparedness, including measures for the La Nina weather phenomenon.

“The Drainage and Irrigation Department has identified more than 3,682 flood hotspots as the main focus for monitoring and action in light of La Nina,” he said.

“Meanwhile, the Department of Minerals and Geoscience has pinpointed 254 critical slopes.”

Fahmi added that 1,768 hydrological stations, 614 flood warning sirens, and 285 pumping stations are on standby. Mobile pumping capacity has also been increased to respond swiftly to any sudden rise in water levels.

Authorities have flagged several dams requiring close observation, with immediate intervention planned if water levels reach critical thresholds.

The military has been activated under Ops Murni to assist with rescue operations and logistical support throughout the monsoon season. - November 14, 2025
