AN INDONESIAN woman was rescued after she is believed to have been exploited as an illegal domestic helper for almost 16 years.
Malaysian Immigration Director-General Datuk Zakaria Shaaban said in a statement that the 56-year-old victim was found hiding under a four-wheel drive when the ATIPSOM and Anti-Money Laundering Division (AMLA) team, Putrajaya Immigration Headquarters, conducted an operation at a house in Batu Caves, Selangor on November 24.
Investigations found that the victim was ordered to hide to avoid being found by the authorities.
"The victim worked without any valid pass and was only promised a salary of RM600 a month but has not received any payment for the past two years.
"Throughout the period of employment, the victim was also allegedly subjected to physical and emotional stress when she was often scolded and beaten by her employer.
"The victim was also not allowed to hold a passport, mobile phone and faced communication restrictions so that she could not contact her family," the statement said.
The victim was forced to work without breaks and had to steal time to sleep. In the operation, a 51-year-old local man who was the victim's employer was also arrested.
The suspect admitted to getting the victim through a close family member. The case is being investigated under the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants (ATIPSOM) Act 2007 (Act 670).
If convicted, the offender could face life imprisonment or a minimum of five years, in addition to whipping for more serious offences. JIM views human trafficking cases seriously and will not compromise with any party involved.
In addition, the public is urged to channel information related to the exploitation of foreigners so that immediate action can be taken.
